ddmiers | The Impact of Market Conditions on 0DTE Options Pricing | Zero Days to Expiration (0DTE) options have become a powerful tool in the hands of both retail and institutional traders. These contracts, which expire on the same day they are traded, offer the allure of rapid profits and pinpoint timing.

However, this speed comes at a cost: their pricing is extremely sensitive to shifts in market conditions. Unlike traditional options with days or weeks until expiration, 0DTE options are influenced in real-time by volatility, momentum, order flow, and even the time of day.

Understanding how these variables impact pricing is critical for anyone trading these instruments. This article explores the dynamics behind 0DTE options and how various market forces interact to shape their value, often within minutes.

Understanding 0DTE Options

0DTE options are unique financial instruments that derive their value from underlying assets, just like standard options. The primary difference lies in their expiration date—they expire the same day they’re traded. This feature makes them extremely sensitive to intraday price movements, volatility, and even minute-by-minute shifts in sentiment.

Because of their incredibly short lifespan, 0DTE options experience accelerated time decay, or theta. In a typical option contract, theta erodes value gradually over time. For 0DTE options, this erosion can be explosive, especially during the latter half of the trading day. These options are typically used for tactical plays—market reactions to news, economic releases, or technical levels.

Retail traders are drawn to the potential for large percentage gains, while institutions often use these contracts for hedging, market making, or gamma exposure management. Compared to longer-dated options, 0DTEs offer little room for error, making the market environment crucial to pricing. Click here now for more information.

The Role of Implied Volatility (IV)

On days with major economic announcements, such as the release of inflation data, unemployment reports, or Federal Reserve policy decisions, IV tends to spike leading into the event. This anticipation inflates the premium of 0DTE options. Traders are effectively paying for protection or speculation on a short-term move.

However, once the event concludes and uncertainty subsides, IV can collapse just as quickly—a phenomenon known as “IV crush.” This rapid contraction erodes option premiums instantly, even if the underlying asset hasn’t moved dramatically. In SPX 0DTE contracts, for example, it’s common to see the same contract lose more than half its value within minutes post-announcement due to IV deflation.

Market Sentiment and Momentum

Market sentiment—how investors feel about the market’s direction—can cause dramatic pricing distortions in 0DTE options. Unlike long-dated options that consider broader macro outlooks, 0DTE contracts are acutely sensitive to intraday mood swings.

When sentiment is bullish, call premiums may rise sharply, even in the absence of strong directional movement. Similarly, in a bearish tape, puts can become inflated as traders seek immediate downside protection. Momentum, whether fueled by technical breakouts or news catalysts, tends to push option pricing above intrinsic value due to increased demand and fear of missing out.

Pricing often reflects the market’s psychology more than its reality. For example, during a midday rally, 0DTE call options may trade at levels that imply an aggressive continuation, even if the underlying asset has reached resistance. Understanding this emotional pricing component helps traders identify overbought or oversold premiums and fade irrational spikes.

Liquidity and Order Flow

Liquidity is the lifeblood of any options market, and for 0DTE contracts, it determines whether pricing remains orderly or becomes erratic. The presence of market makers and high-frequency traders ensures tight spreads and fair execution, at least during normal conditions.

However, when order flow becomes imbalanced, such as an overwhelming rush into call buying, market makers may adjust pricing to protect their positions. This adjustment often leads to wider bid-ask spreads and sudden shifts in premium. Dealers who are short calls may hedge by buying the underlying asset, causing a gamma squeeze, which further fuels upside momentum and inflates option prices.

Volatility Regimes and Macro Conditions

The broader volatility regime of the market significantly alters how 0DTE options are priced. In a high-VIX environment, markets are jittery, and option premiums, particularly for 0DTE contracts, are expensive. This reflects heightened uncertainty and a wider range of potential outcomes within a single trading session.

Conversely, in a low-VIX, range-bound environment, the pricing of 0DTE options tends to be compressed. Traders betting on outsized moves in these periods may find their contracts decaying quickly unless the market breaks out of its tight range.

Macro conditions such as geopolitical tensions, inflation trends, and interest rate policy also play a major role. Even rumours or news alerts can cause a quick repricing of risk. The market’s expectations around macro data are often baked into options pricing well before the events occur. When reality diverges from expectations, 0DTE contracts can reprice violently.

Conclusion

0DTE options offer unmatched potential for precision and leverage, but they demand a deep understanding of how market conditions impact pricing. From implied volatility and sentiment to macro shifts and time decay, every factor plays a role in how these contracts are valued and behave throughout the trading day. Successful 0DTE traders don’t just predict market direction—they understand the microstructure, flow, and psychology that drive pricing minute by minute. In this fast-moving space, staying nimble and informed is the key to turning volatility into opportunity.

DDMIERS | In the heart of Filipino culture lies a deep love for gathering, sharing stories, laughter, and, of course, a hearty meal. Across islands and regions, food has always been a way for Filipinos to celebrate their roots and connect with one another. It’s this spirit of community and discovery that Balanghai captures.

After a five-year pause, Balanghai is making its highly anticipated comeback at Clark Cityfront Mall, ready to bring diners on a flavorful voyage across the Philippines. First opened in 2018, the buffet restaurant closed its doors in March 2020 at the height of the pandemic. It returns with a refreshed spirit, showcasing the country’s rich regional flavors in a setting that feels like home.

The Inspiration Behind Balanghai

Balanghai pays homage to the seafaring vessel, the balanghai, a plank boat that carried early settlers across the Philippine archipelago. These boats, remarkable for their craftsmanship and speed, symbolize unity, exploration, and community. Historically, the balanghai was more than a mode of transport; it was the foundation of the Filipino community structure, which later evolved into the “barangay” system.

Today, Balanghai seeks to embody that same spirit: connecting Filipinos through the diverse and vibrant flavors of their regional heritage.

A Different Kind of Filipino Buffet

Unlike many buffets that focus only on mainstream Filipino dishes or select regional cuisines, Balanghai offers a curated culinary journey across the archipelago. Its buffet lineup is organized by week:

In the first week, Balanghai features dishes of Northern Luzon, including Pancit Cabagan, a noodle dish from Isabela, and Serkele, a flavorful carabao offal stew from Bulacan. Diners can also enjoy Pancit Luglug and Kinulob dishes, specialties of the Kapampangan region.

The second week highlights the flavors of Manila and Southern Luzon. Dishes like Tilapia Supreme, cooked in coconut milk, take center stage alongside spicy Bicol Express, Sinaing na

Tulingan from Batangas, Hardinera from Quezon, and Kulawong Talong, a char-grilled eggplant dish steeped in coconut milk from Laguna.

Come the third week, the spotlight moves to the Visayas, where Ilonggo classics like Kansi (a sour beef shank soup made with batwan fruit) and KBL (Kadyos, Baboy, Langka) are served. Diners can also savor Batchoy, Pancit Molo, and the rare Tambalo, a unique seafood found in select towns of Samar.

The fourth week celebrates the diverse flavors of Mindanao. The buffet features dishes influenced by neighboring Southeast Asian cultures, such as Pastil, Beef Rendang, Beef Kulma Tausug, and Satay from Zamboanga. There are also Southern Mindanao specialties like Linagpang na Manok and Tinolang Tuna from General Santos.

This rotation ensures diners always encounter something new and interesting, encouraging nostalgic rediscoveries and adventurous first tastes. On special days at the end of the month, Balanghai even offers “fiesta” buffets that bring together dishes from all regions, or fusion offerings like Chinoy (Chinese-Pinoy) dishes.

Rooted in Tradition, Committed to Quality

At any given time, Balanghai features about 40 dishes, including 10–15 regional specialties. What sets the restaurant apart is the careful research behind every plate. Rather than relying on cookbooks or online recipes, the team traveled across the country, learning from local cooks and market vendors.

“We didn’t just pull recipes off the internet,” shares Dr. Robert H. Lo, Chief Innovation Officer of New Business Development of RDF Feed, Livestock & Foods, Inc. “We went to the source: to the markets of Ilocos Norte for real Bagnet, to Catbalogan for Tambalos, to Zamboanga for authentic Southern Mindanao cooking.“

Sourcing the right ingredients came with challenges. Some ingredients, like the batwan, essential for Ilonggo Kansi, spoil quickly when left at room temperature and need special handling. Others, like premium tilapia from Batangas and Bicol, require careful selection to maintain quality. Balanghai’s meats are supplied by RDF, ensuring consistent food safety standards and supporting the restaurant’s vision of serving authentic Filipino cuisine.

Despite the hurdles, the team succeeded in recreating flavors that resonate with authenticity. It’s this dedication to preserving regional tastes, even when some dishes were unfamiliar or surprising to diners, that makes Balanghai a true culinary voyage across the Philippines.

A Dining Experience Beyond the Buffet Table

More than just a feast for the tastebuds, Balanghai offers an immersive Filipino cultural experience. The restaurant’s interiors reflect traditional Filipino aesthetics, with guest relations officers welcoming diners in traditional baro’t saya. A dedicated street food section also features

nostalgic bites like Pigar Pigar from Pangasinan and Tupig, further adding to the sense of homecoming for many diners.

Comfort was also a key priority. The buffet area was designed to avoid the crowded feel typical of other restaurants, providing a spacious and relaxing atmosphere for families and travelers alike.

A New Chapter for Balanghai

To celebrate its grand reopening, Balanghai is offering a special promotional rate of ₱649 per head until June 30, 2025. After the promotion, the regular buffet rate will be ₱888.

Looking ahead, the team behind Balanghai is already planning to expand. A larger branch is set to open in Capital Town Pampanga by late 2026, a testament to the restaurant’s commitment to bringing regional Filipino flavors to more diners.
At its heart, Balanghai isn’t just a buffet — it’s a voyage. It’s a tribute to the country’s rich, diverse heritage and a reminder that there is always more to discover beyond the familiar. As Dr. Robert H. Lo reflects, “We created Balanghai to show that the Philippines isn’t just about adobo and sinigang. Every region has its culinary treasures — and at Balanghai, you get to taste them all.”

These women leaders are more than just executives; they are trailblazers creating a sustainable and equitable future, proving that when women lead, they catalyze widespread organizational growth and innovation.

DDMIERS | RDF Ushers in the Chinese New Year | City of San Fernando, Pampanga – Over 1500 employees and guests of RDF Feed, Livestock & Foods, Inc. celebrated the Chinese New Year on January 14, 2025, at the Kingsborough International Convention Center in Pampanga.

For 2025, the Chinese New Year or Spring Festival starts on January 29 and ends on February 12. This year’s zodiac animal is the wood snake.

With the theme, “Cheers to New Beginnings,” the event kicked off with a Building Decoration Contest (of various RDF buildings and selected stores of Fresh Options) on January 6.

In observance of the Chinese New Year, the Chinese adorn their houses with red lanterns because they believe that hanging them in front of the house will drive evil spirits and bad luck, while red symbolizes good fortune, happiness, and prosperity. The tradition also signifies removing the old, welcoming the New Year with a fresh start, and embracing the possibilities ahead.

Afternoon Program

In a mini Binondo-inspired island booth outside of Kingsborough, employees were treated to food and drink galore, allowing them to experience the Binondo food crawl, savoring some of the popular Chinese-Filipino fusion dishes like fried wanton, fried quekiam, pork kutchay, and fresh lumpia from Little Chinatown. RDF owns and operates Little Chinatown at Don Juico Avenue in Angeles City.

Moreover, the gathering was an occasion to recognize 69 loyal employees at the Employees Service Awards; and eight outstanding programs that embodied the core values of RDF through the annual TRIUMPPH Awards. Employees who have worked for the company for at least five years received plaques and tokens. The awardee for 35 Years of Service is Mr. Jacinto Candole, Jr. The TRIUMPPH winners, on the other hand, were awarded trophies.

Ms. Millie Joy Mandocdoc, Head of Human Resources, and Dr. Joy Michelle Literato, Director for Corporate Affairs, were the emcees of the Employees Service Awards and the TRIUMPPH Awards, respectively.

Aside from the colorful parade featuring dragon and lion dancers, the main highlight of the evening program was the Chinese Dance Competition, in which employees from 16 cluster buildings of RDF participated. Also, adding to the fun and excitement was the selection of Mr. & Ms. Little Chinatown. Another most anticipated portion of the program was the electronic draw that raffled off almost 300 prizes.

DDMIERS | A Legacy of Loyalty: Celebrating Kuya Junior’s 35 Years at RDF | As RDF Feed, Livestock & Foods, Inc. celebrates its 36th anniversary, the company does more than simply commemorate its years of success—it honors the pillars that have upheld its values and vision.

Among those, Mr. Jacinto Candole, Jr., affectionately known as Kuya Junior, stands out remarkably. Celebrating 35 years with RDF, Kuya Junior embodies a rare commitment seen in today’s fast-paced world, where spending over three decades with a single company is as extraordinary as it is inspiring.

Kuya Junior’s career at RDF vividly illustrates deep-seated loyalty and unwavering dedication. His journey showcases his personal growth and mirrors the company’s core values.

Kuya Junior being congratulated by Dr. Robert H. Lo (Founder and CEO) and witnessed by Mr. Jayson L. Villa (Chief Resource Officer)

Through the years, his experiences at RDF have shaped his career and stood as a testament to the kind of personal and professional development that the company fosters, making his story a beacon for all at RDF.

From Novice to Expert

Kuya Junior’s ascent from a fledgling employee to becoming one of the Area Supervisors for Poultry Operations shows a story of ambition fueled by continuous learning and leadership.

In 1989, he worked as an all-around helper under Dr. Robert H. Lo’s mother in their department store in Cubao. From handling appliances as a salesperson to picking up stocks, he supported all operations before moving to Red Dragon Farm in Pampanga, driven by curiosity and a desire for a less costly life away from Manila.

His early days were filled with diverse roles, from doing payroll computations manually to purchasing farm supplies and managing harvest operations as a checker, under the guidance of Dr. Robert H. Lo, or as Kuya Junior calls him, Boss Robert.

As an Area Supervisor, Kuya Junior’s role involves not just oversight of daily operations but strategic leadership that ensures each farm operates optimally and remains free from diseases. His career growth is a showcase of RDF’s commitment to nurturing its people, ensuring they evolve with the company, and leading its operations to new heights.

Overcoming Industry Challenges

The path has not always been smooth. The poultry industry is laden with challenges, notably the threat of diseases such as avian flu, and illnesses that can affect the other workers, and devastate productivity.

Kuya Junior has been pivotal in steering RDF’s poultry operations clear of such threats through meticulous management and proactive strategies. Given his vast knowledge about the avian flu and how fast it could spread, he and the other leadmen would make sure that when they were loading chicks in the farm, no one would leave the premises, or visit another one of the company’s farms. While the risk of a human contracting the avian flu was rare, Kuya Junior’s dedication to maintaining quality standards motivated him not to risk it.

Another example is during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Kuya Junior was one of the workers who actively made sure that if one of the other leadmen was sick, that person would immediately go under quarantine. He would also inform other departments about it so that anyone considered a close contact would not spread the virus.

His approach to these challenges demonstrates RDF’s dedication to maintaining high standards of food safety and operational excellence, ensuring a stable supply of products to the market.

Cultivating Future Leaders

Leadership at RDF goes beyond managing resources—it’s about nurturing talent and empowering individuals. Kuya Junior embodies this philosophy, dedicating himself to mentoring the next generation of farm managers.

“Kung mahal mo ang trabaho mo, magtitiwala sayo yung mga katrabaho at mga boss..” (If you love your work, your coworkers and supervisors will trust you)

His methodical yet compassionate leadership style helps new employees not only understand the intricacies of farm management but also inspires them to take initiative and lead with confidence.

This nurturing trait aligns with RDF’s mission to support and develop its workforce, ensuring a future as promising as its present.

The Bonds of Support and Success

Why has Kuya Junior remained committed to RDF for over three decades?

The answer lies in the supportive and enriching environment RDF provides. The encouragement from leaders like Boss Robert has instilled a sense of belonging and loyalty in him.

Back when he worked directly under Boss Robert, Kuya Junior recalled always being motivated by him to strive harder and aim higher with his goals. Even going so far as to tell him that his career should not end with just being a regular employee, and to work hard maybe even be an entrepreneur himself.

This relationship has enabled Kuya Junior to thrive, reflecting RDF’s culture of mutual respect and support, which is fundamental to its success.

Growth Through Learning

At RDF, growth is continuous. Kuya Junior’s professional journey has been marked by numerous training programs designed to enhance his skills and leadership capabilities. These trainings have equipped him with the technical skills required for his role and also life lessons that transcend the workplace. Kuya Junior shared that many of the lessons he has learned from workshops and trainings involved solving problems and how one could help guide others to become leaders.

“Yung mga natutunan ko, dadalhin ko na sa pagtanda..” (The lessons I’ve learned, I would remember them until I grow older)

His story is a beacon for RDF’s commitment to employee development, illustrating how the company invests in each individual’s success.

Making a Mark on RDF

Kuya Junior’s contributions to RDF go beyond routine supervision; they have been transformative. His efforts in optimizing farm operations and implementing safety protocols have significantly reduced risks and enhanced productivity.

His leadership has achieved operational targets and also fostered a culture of safety and efficiency that others aspire to emulate.

Celebrations and Comradeship

The camaraderie at RDF, cultivated by shared experiences and collective achievements, is vivid in Kuya Junior’s favorite memories.

From small gatherings to celebrate farm achievements to international trips with colleagues, these moments highlight the joy and unity that permeate RDF’s culture, and foster a sense of family and shared success.

Kuya Junior with his wife & children

He fondly recalled a memory back when the company was just starting and there were fewer farms. Every time he and his team would reach their targets, they would be encouraged by Boss Robert to go out and celebrate.

“Kahit na tumatanda na ang katawan ko, napamahal na ako sa trabaho ko, napamahal na ako sa RDF..” (Even though my body is getting old, I have fallen in love with my work, I have fallen in love with RDF)

Even as Kuya Junior contemplates retirement, his deep affection for RDF and his role remains undiminished. Despite his advancing years and suggestions from others to retire, his love for the job has only grown. RDF has not just been a workplace for him; it has been a means to provide for his family, support his children’s education, and secure financial stability by purchasing property.

Further cementing his legacy at RDF, one of his children, who holds a degree in Business Economics, has joined the company, eager to learn and grow within the same environment that shaped Kuya Junior’s prolific career.

A Beacon for the Future: Inspiring the Next Generation

As RDF Feed, Livestock & Foods, Inc. continues to celebrate its milestones and look towards the future, the story of Mr. Jacinto Candole, Jr. stands as a beacon of dedication and leadership.

Over the past 35 years, Kuya Junior has not only contributed significantly to RDF’s growth but has also inspired a culture of commitment and excellence that resonates throughout the company. He is incredibly overjoyed by being the recipient of the company’s loyalty award, delighted by just how much the company has trusted him thanks to his hard work and dedication.

“Masaya ako sa 35 years, at kahit 51 years old na ako, masaya din ako na malakas pa ako at kaya ko pa magtrabaho.. Malaki ang pasasalamat ko sa RDF, at hindi mapapantayan yung saya ko..” (I am happy with my 35 years in the company, and even though I am 51 years old, I am also happy that I am still strong and can still work. I am very grateful to RDF, and my joy is incomparable)

Looking ahead, he thinks about starting a family business back in his hometown in Samar or remaining connected to RDF even in retirement by being a poultry supplier.

As we honor his legacy, Kuya Junior’s story will undoubtedly inspire current and future generations at RDF to carry forward the torch of excellence and unwavering dedication.

DDMIERS | TSQA – The Guardian of Safety and Quality at Red Dragon Farms | In a world where food quality directly impacts health and well-being, the responsibility of businesses in the food and beverage industry is immense.

RDF Feed, Livestock & Foods, Inc. is a fully integrated agri-food enterprise in Central Luzon, Philippines that owns and operates several poultry and swine farms and industrial facilities such as feed mill, slaughterhouse, meat-cutting and meat processing plants, a chain of meat shops (under the brand name of Fresh Options Meatshop), and restaurants. Its mission to serve customers well goes beyond offering high-quality meats. It is about delivering a promise of excellence and safety.

Central to this commitment is the meticulous work of its Technical Services and Quality Assurance (TSQA) Department, the backbone of the company’s core to uphold safe, clean, and unparalleled quality across all products.

What Is Food Safety and Why It Is a Continuing Challenge

Understanding the complexities of food safety is crucial for maintaining RDF’s industry-leading standards.

Food safety includes all strategies and processes employed to prevent foodborne illnesses and ensure food products are safe for consumption.

This is particularly challenging in the meat industry due to the susceptibility of meats to microbial contamination and spoilage. Additionally, the global trade in food products requires adherence to a complex array of international, national, and regional regulations that are frequently updated.

As consumer expectations evolve, so do RDF’s efforts to meet and exceed them. After all, today’s consumers are becoming increasingly well-informed about the food they eat. When it comes to buying meats, factors such as freshness, origin, and especially safety are paramount.

Food safety certifications play a crucial role in influencing consumer decisions. Certifications like FSSC 22000 show consumers that the meat they buy has been produced in compliance with internationally recognized food safety management standards.

These certifications are not just logos on packaging—they represent a commitment to ongoing compliance and safety that involves regular audits and continuous improvement. By ensuring these standards are met, the TSQA team helps build consumer trust and loyalty, setting itself apart in a competitive market.

RELATED: RDF is Food Safety System Certified Anew

The Role of the TSQA Department in Ensuring Meat Safety and Quality

RDF prioritizes expertise and specialized education within its TSQA Department, with 82% of the team holding college degrees, and 40% specifically in Food Technology, highlighting a strong focus on food safety and quality assurance. This educational investment in the workforce is complemented by a diverse range of expertise from various related fields, ensuring a comprehensive approach to quality control and operational excellence.

As its mandate, TSQA oversees every aspect of production from farm to store:

Live Operations: The team focuses on the quality and safety of the animal feed used at the feed mill, supported by comprehensive health monitoring and diagnostics at the farm level conducted by Biolab, RDF’s in-house testing laboratory.

Central Depot Operations: Here, the journey from slaughter to packaging is managed precisely. The department ensures all staff, supplies, and processes comply with safety standards, using sensory evaluations and rigorous testing to maintain product consistency and quality.

Retail Operations: At the retail level, TSQA guarantees that all products of Fresh Options meet established food safety standards and that staff adhere to strict hygiene practices through regular training and audits. The department upholds rigorous food safety, hygiene, and sanitation practices, including scientific handling, preparation, and storage methods to prevent illnesses and manage health hazards.

Restaurant Operations: TSQA implements a comprehensive Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) system to control physical, biological, and chemical risks throughout the supply chain, supported by the FSSC 22000 certification which governs food safety risks and compliance with quality requirements from raw materials to finished products. All staff undergo ServSafe training, accredited by the American National Standards, ensuring adherence to the latest food safety protocols.

Even with the most stringent protocols in place, the company remains vigilant and responsive to the needs of its customers. Quality audits are also integral to maintaining high standards of food safety and quality. These audits are conducted weekly and cover all aspects of the operation—from the feed mill and slaughterhouse to processing plants, and retail stores.

Each audit is carefully planned and executed to assess compliance with both internal standards and external regulatory requirements. The scope includes everything from biosecurity measures to ensure no cross-contamination occurs, to operational procedures that guarantee consistent product quality. Audit results are used not only to confirm compliance but also to identify opportunities for improvement, making sure that TSQA’s commitment to quality is proactive and responsive to the latest industry developments and challenges.

These practices, combined with a mission to set high standards and provide reliable quality assessments, ensure that all products of Fresh Options meet the highest standards for safety and quality, reaffirming the brand’s commitment to excellence.

Moreover, the TSQA Department has established a robust process for handling complaints that begins with a thorough documentation of the complaint details, followed by a systematic investigation to identify the root cause. This involves reviewing CCTV footage, conducting interviews with relevant personnel, or reexamining production records.

Once the cause is identified, corrective actions are formulated and implemented to prevent recurrence. Communication with the customer is maintained throughout the process to assure that they are satisfied with the resolution. This approach not only resolves individual issues but also contributes to the overall quality assurance strategy, helping to prevent future complaints and enhance customer satisfaction.

Upholding the Highest Standards

As the guardian of quality and safety, the TSQA Department is more than just a functional unit within RDF. It is the very foundation of the company’s commitment to excellence. Through its strategies, TSQA ensures that every piece of meat processed and sold surpasses the rigorous standards expected by customers and regulatory bodies alike.

The effectiveness of the TSQA Department is not limited to maintaining standards; it extends to enhancing the trust and loyalty of customers. By integrating advanced safety protocols, conducting thorough quality audits, and addressing customer feedback effectively, TSQA plays a crucial role in driving continuous improvement throughout the company. This relentless pursuit of excellence sets RDF apart in the competitive landscape of the meat industry, making it a leader in food safety and customer satisfaction.

Through its unwavering dedication to quality, TSQA not only upholds RDF’s reputation as a top-tier provider of safe, high-quality meats but also reinforces its promise to customers that they are receiving the best products available. This commitment to excellence is encapsulated in the company’s Pledge of Quality, emphasizing quality at every stage of operation.

DDMIERS | Globe builds 352 cell towers, upgrades nearly 2,000 mobile sites in H1 2024 | Globe continues to make significant strides in expanding its network infrastructure across the country, building 352 cell towers and upgrading 1,942 existing mobile sites to LTE technology for the first half of 2024. The network buildup aims to enhance Globe’s mobile services and data speeds to provide reliable life-enabling connectivity to Filipinos.

In addition to mobile network improvements, Globe has made notable advancements in its fiber infrastructure. The company deployed 39,880 fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) lines from January to June this year, further expanding its high-speed fiber internet coverage.

This year’s rollout is strategically planned to maximize the utilization of Globe’s existing fiber inventory, aligning with its reduced cash Capital Expenditure (Capex) allocation.

Globe’s network expansion efforts extend beyond urban centers, having successfully brought connectivity to over 500 Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDAs) as part of its commitment to bridging the digital divide.

By connecting remote communities, Globe enables residents to access vital online services, educational resources, and economic opportunities that were once limited by geographical barriers.

Joel Agustin, Head of Service Planning and Engineering of Globe, emphasized the company’s dedication to inclusive connectivity: “We believe that every Filipino deserves access to reliable communication services. We’re here to empower them with the tools they need to thrive in a digital world.”

Globe’s network expansion strategy has evolved since 2023, with a shift towards optimizing network investments rather than pursuing opportunistic capacity expansion. This strategic pivot has yielded positive results, allowing the mobile leader to return to sustainable Capex levels without compromising network quality or capacity.

The company’s efforts align with its mission to improve the country’s digital infrastructure and support the government’s initiatives to enhance nationwide connectivity and improve quality of life.

DDMIERS | LO to UPLB Vet Med Graduates: “Strive for your Peak” | RDF Founder and CEO Dr. Robert H. Lo delivered a powerful and inspiring message to the graduating class of 2024 during the Recognition Rites and Hooding Ceremony of the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) held on July 31 at the Charles Fuller Baker Hall, UPLB.

Dr. Lo drew on his entrepreneurial experiences to urge the country’s future veterinarians to “strive for your peak and achieve greatness.” He shared three guiding principles that served as a foundation for establishing and managing his agri-food enterprise.

The guest speaker was a Finalist in the Entrepreneur of the Year (EOY) Philippines 2022, a project of the SGV Foundation. He finished his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1983 at UP Diliman.

Here is the text of his speech.

#1 Turning Crises into Opportunities

My journey began with a simple love for animals. Growing up, I owned many pets, which ignited my passion for veterinary medicine. Initially, I enrolled in a pre-med course at UST, but I soon realized that becoming a doctor was not my true calling. Following my heart, I applied to the UP College of Veterinary Medicine in 1979 and was accepted, which turned out to be one of the happiest moments of my life.

After graduating in 1983, I faced numerous challenges. My dream of pursuing a master’s degree at UC Davis was shattered when my US Visa application was rejected. This rejection was a big blow, leading to a period of sadness and frustration. Shortly after, I started small business ventures like an animal clinic and a quail farm, which unfortunately also failed.

However, I soon realized that these failures were not the end; they were lessons preparing me for greater challenges.

In 1986, I, along with a group of classmates from the College of Vet Med, became a contract grower for San Miguel Corporation in San Simon, Pampanga, and later, I started a poultry farm in Bacolor, also in Pampanga, with my brother. Despite our clashes and difficulties, we successfully expanded our operations. However, the challenges did not stop there, when the Asian Crisis hit us hard in 1997, I lost almost 13 million pesos in a month.

In 2000, there was rampant dumping of chicken leg quarters into Subic and Clark and we at the United Broiler Raisers Association or UBRA lobbied for the illegal importation of chicken parts to save the local poultry industry. Thank God, the then DA Secretary Edgardo Angara listened and implemented the ban.

From these experiences, I learned the importance of resiliency and collaboration in overcoming challenges.

So, dear graduates, as you step into the real world, remember this: Every crisis you encounter is not the end of the road but a detour, a redirection towards something greater. When you face obstacles, don’t see them as impassable barriers but as challenges that test your resolve and creativity.

Innovation often springs from adversity. It’s in these moments that you discover your true potential. Embrace these challenges, learn from them, and let them guide you towards new opportunities. The path may not always be smooth, but it’s the bumps along the way that build character and resilience.

#2 Pursuing Your Passion

Passion has been my driving force throughout my journey.

After overcoming the Asian Crisis, I diversified into hog farming and later ventured into retail with Fresh Options Meatshop. These businesses were driven by my love for what I do and a continuous desire to improve.

While managing these businesses, I realized the importance of continuous learning. I pursued a master’s degree in entrepreneurship at the Asian Institute of Management, which opened my eyes to new possibilities and improved my business acumen.

Reflecting on these experiences, I understand the profound impact that passion and a desire for continuous learning can have on one’s career and personal growth.

Steve Jobs once said, “Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish.” This quote has always resonated with me. It embodies the spirit of passion and continuous learning. Being curious and embracing new challenges keep us moving forward and always striving for excellence.

Dear graduates of 2024, I urge you to find what truly ignites your spirit. Passion is the fuel that will drive you through the inevitable ups and downs of your career. It transforms work into something much more meaningful. When you love what you do, it never feels like work. Passion is not only hard work. It is also “heart work.”

But remember, passion alone is not enough. Pair it with a hunger for knowledge and an open mind. Never stop learning. Whether it’s through formal education, on-the-job training, or personal hobbies, keep feeding your curiosity. Read books, attend short courses, learn and adapt to new technologies – these are just some of the many ways how you can improve yourselves. Always be on the lookout for new opportunities to grow and evolve.

#3 Leading with Empathy

Empathy has been a cornerstone of my leadership. In our company, RDF, we put a premium on quality and we value trust and respect. I empower my team to make decisions and give them my full trust. I believe understanding people’s emotions and placing oneself in their shoes is crucial for effective leadership.

A study by the Harvard Business Review found that leaders who exhibit empathy and emotional intelligence significantly outperform their peers. Companies led by such individuals saw a significant increase in employee engagement and productivity. This shows the importance of empathy in leadership.

Life is not always fair, but we must adjust and find solutions rather than dwelling on problems. Being empathetic and understanding the perspectives of others enable us to make better decisions and lead more effectively. I have always believed in training my team to be leaders, empowering them to make decisions, and fostering an environment of trust and mutual respect.

Through these practices, I’ve seen firsthand how empathy can transform teams and drive success in ways that purely transactional leadership cannot.

Graduates, when you begin to fill leadership roles, big or small, remember the power of empathy. Leading with empathy means understanding and valuing the people you work with. It means listening actively and considering their feelings and perspectives.

Empathy builds trust, fosters collaboration, and ultimately drives success. It’s about creating an environment where everyone feels valued and understood. In a world that often emphasizes individual achievement, do not forget the importance of connecting with others on a human level. As you move forward in your careers, let empathy guide your decisions and interactions. This approach will not only make you a better leader but also a better person.

As you step into the next chapter of your lives, graduates, remember these three key themes: #1 Turn crises into opportunities, #2 Pursue your passion, and #3 Lead with empathy. Life will present you with challenges, but by applying these principles, you will surely overcome them.

Allow me to leave you with an acronym to encapsulate these themes: P.E.A.K. – Passion, Empathy, Adaptability, and Knowledge. Strive for your peak, and you will achieve greatness.

To close, I would like to summarize my commencement address with a quote:

“In every crisis, find the opportunity. Let passion drive your pursuits, and lead your team with empathy.”

Congratulations to the graduating class of 2024. The world is waiting for you to make your mark. Go forth and make it a better place.

Maraming salamat at mabuhay tayo!
